Ovechkin head in locker commercial

I have been preaching for a long time the NHL needs to market its super stars in order to draw in more fans. That’s what all the other major sports in the world do. Its all about the fan having recognition with a face of the league which is generally some of its best and most exciting players.

In the case of the NHL it has been Ovechkin & Crosby over the past number of years. Very wise decisions based on the skill level and accomplishment of each player so far.

I already spoke about why the NHL Hard Knocks reality TV show copying the NFL was a fantastic idea. So why not keep things rolling heading into another exciting NHL season set to begin this week with super star Alex Ovechkin?

This is a must see commercial featuring Ovechkin in a CCM commerical:

Pretty funny commercial.

I find it interesting and there will always be a debate over which player between Ovehkin and Crosby is better.

In my opinion Crosby is still a better overall player, he’s won at every single level while Ovechkin has never made it past the 2nd round in the NHL playoffs, nor did he win anything of significance at the international level compared to Crosby. Plus, he is two years younger.

However, from a marketing standpoint I would select Ovechkin he appears to be more charismatic and outspoken in front of the camera. Plus, he is the flashier player on the ice having scored 60+ goals and involved with more highlight reel goals.

I couldn’t really imagine Crosby being used for this type of commercial, even if Reebook Crosby’s sponsor tried to utilize him in a similar fashion. Especially when the punch line for OV is we must win now, something Ovechkin clearly needs to do more so than Crosby at this point of their respective careers.
